Surfs up at the Salisbury Beach 2009

Jet Skier

The fog never really lifted for the racers and their fans on the beach but the race must go on. At the end of the Salisbury beach strip, the highlights according to TLS were: the Jet Ski racing and Zapstix Surf Shop Surf demo.

Zap was hosting surf lessons as well as the demo. He recently opened a surf shop off the main beach drag, which compliments the one in Seabrook NH. featuring: Boards-Rentals-Surf Lessons-Beach Clothing.

The jet skiers were waiting in the pit area for the sun to burn off some the fog. It never happened. It was mid-tide when the races finally got underway, but still no sun. The race started and the tide came in with large shore breaking waves. It became more difficult for the racers to line up at the start. While waiting for the whistle to start the race they were pounded by the powerful shore break. At the start most of the racers were caught between the beach‚ steep incline and the on coming waves, which made for some interesting whole shots and big vertical airs. Every minute seemed to be more difficult then the next. There was only one woman racing who was super fast and ripping it in the challenging surf and chop.

The event was really cool literally and figuratively.

The sun never burnt off the fog, and a misty rain was present all day. I find there is a common thread which runs through all the athletes who TreeLine encounters week in and week out. Whether it is 100 mph+ on a frozen lake, riding big bikes on a sandy track, ripping jet skis in surf and fog, or minis through the mud, everyone is out to hit it hard, help out, and get some racing done!

Motor sports athletes are tough diehards who usually put in a full work week at their ‚day jobs‚and then head out for a weekend of motto action. No one seems to be letting a recession, inclement weather or tight finances keep them from doing what they love.

Bad visibility, cold and windy weather made the race at Salisbury beach a classic (hardcore) east coast event!!
